She Will Run - Wk 1 Stress

It just goes to show. I finally get into gear with putting together teaching sessions and wanting to do more with my using my blog as I intended and my week is busier than ever. Talk about stress. A great tester for how I am managing mine! I started out well but it all got a bit much as more and more was added to the pile without finishing what I needed to. It was a case of deal with it as best I could and make the most of the opportunity I finally have now to get back on top of things. A huge shout out to my hubby who has taken the boys for some action time and given me some space.

So to the study: Managing your stress. The dictionary defines it as 1. Pressure: tension. 2. Physical or mental strain. 3. emphasis on something. As I read this I happened to glance at the next word which was stretch. It got me to thinking. Stress is just like this. We are like a rubber band, stretched often times in different directions and to full or what feels like beyond our capacity. And what happens then. Either the rubber band snaps or pings off, hurting us and others. Most times I know that the ones who get hurt seem to be my children or husband as they are most likely to be in the cross fire even though they may not be the cause of my stress.

Stress comes in different packages but affects all of us. Sometimes I think that it often isn't the big things in life such as financial, health or relationship issues that cause the most trouble as we can identify these. It is the little everyday things like being on time to something, forgetting something that you needed as you go out the door and cleaning up another mess your toddler has made, that build up unnoticed. The result is a blow up at just one more little thing {the straw that broke the camels back}. You wonder how something so minor can cause that reaction from you.

Some degree of stress is healthy and necessary as it gets us going to achieve our goals. It is the quantity of stress and how we deal with it that weighs us down. Have you seen the illustration of the person standing at the top of the cliff looking down and the ambulance waiting below? As we look at this issue we address how instead of waiting for stress to take its toll (the ambulance}, we can identify the stress and address how we can manage it better {putting a fence at the top of the cliff}.

A big part of identifying your stress is getting to know yourself. Making a list of what areas are stressing you right now. Are there similarities between them. What is it that triggers your reaction? How do you deal with it? I know for me it isn't usually the situation itself that stresses me but whether I am organised for it. I find it hard to deal with things when there is chaos about me and I can't focus on the task at hand. My solution has been to put in place diffferent things {a whole post in itself} so I can focus.

An important key to dealing with stress is looking after yourself. We need to give ourselves permission to do something for us. We are constantly told that getting exercise and having at least 8 hours of sleep are essential. But, I don't know many mums that can put their hand up for that being a constant in their life. If you find it hard to not feel guilty about taking a bit of time, instead see it as a reward or a celebration of something you have achieved. Make a list of little things like sitting down for a cuppa and read a mag, having a foot spa, or reading a blog. Choose one thing that you can realistically do. Like the emergency instructions on a plane: if the oxygen mask comes down put it on yourself first and then assist your child. 'If Mum ain't happy ain't nobody happy!' And remember to breathe. Not take a deep breath {it has been read somewhere that this isn't good - when you think about it, it almost gives fuel to the fire to let rip}. Just the simple action of focus on breathing in and out and giving yourself time to think before you react. This one was actually my word for last year. You can read more about this here.

The stress associated with relationships is a biggie. When we are in conflict with someone else the stress that it can cause can often build, especially as we focus on how we will deal with that person when we see them. As a result we end up feeling anger, resentment and bitterness. These things are addressed more during later sessions. I realise more and more the importance of identifying and dealing with issues that cause broken relationships and how important it is to ensure that you have relationships that energise you. In line with this is recognising when other people are putting their stress on to you. Are you able to say no? Next week we look at this one in more detail.

If there is one thing that I have learnt and taken hold of it is the idea that we are in control of our actions. That given a situation we are able to stop and think before we react. Our brain is often on autopilot though and responds to what we put into it, and what we have experienced. Replacing our negative thoughts with positive ones, develops a can do attitude.

I leave you with an illustration that you can read on this post. Through learning, sharing, prayer, and taking it one step at a time you can become better.

I look forward to sharing next week as we look at the area of Motherly Guilt.

She Will Run

Every Tuesday during term time I am a part of a great team that heads up Mainly Music at Northpoint Church in Bell Block, New Plymouth. As part of our time we have started a session that runs after the music time with the children. Welcome to those who have joined me already.

This term we are looking at the study that has been developed from the book 'She Will Run' by Suzie Botross. It has been specifically geared towards mum's. 'If you are a woman hungry to be more, live more, enjoy more, love more, and influence more, this book is for you! She Will Run is designed to help you not only develop personal life skills but also to help you thrive in your relationships with others....'

Life sometimes feels like a race that we can't win. We run in circles, run and never catch up and run til we drop. 'She Will Run' gives us a focus for equiping and inspiring you to run your race. You have been designed for a specific purpose. It is my hope as we journey through the series together we will find tools and ideas to stay on the track set before us, to run our best race and make a difference.

We are all in this together. While we might think that others have it all together and are living a life that we can only dream about, what you realise is that you only get a small piece of the picture. I often get the comment {after people find out I have 4 boys} 'I don't know how you do it' I hope you can find the answer here on my blog. And that you would capture the gems that I have discovered to live a sorted life.

When life throws you lemons

Today was one of those days that you wish you could either get over with as fast as possible or start over. Its a good thing that tomorrow is another day. Something I shared with the boys as I put them to bed. I want them to know that Mummy makes mistakes too. I spent it trying to catch up with too much and falling way short of the mark. Combined with too many late nights it was always going to head for disaster. Unfortunately the boys seem to bear the brunt of it Still I reached the end {usually defined by getting the boys successfully off to bed} I had a list of things that I always intend to do but never actually do because I am too tired or it has got too late. Tonight a thought struck that when I least feel like it I should do something for someone else. So I made a card for a friend and it felt great. While finding some verses to share I was reminded of the annoying line that had found its way on my new bible. I have been meaning to see if I could get it off {to no avail}. Following on with my thoughts I decided instead to make something of it. So it has now become a flower. A reminder that when life throws you lemons you can become sour or make lemonade.

Where have I been?

I haven't written for too long. Not because I haven't anything to write about {the ideas keep coming} but I have been focused on enjoying the moments in between {the daily grind} One thing my boys are great at is enjoying whatever they are doing at that moment. I've been slowing down, finishing things that I have started and finding what is important. When I look back at my first post it sums it up really. I made this blog so I could have a place to pass on my thoughts and put together the wealth of resources that I refer to. Time to come back to it.

It has been awhile

I keep meaning to write. I have so many things that I have learnt and want to pass on. I have posted so many times on my creative blog. It seems easier. Its not that I have nothing to say I have just been doing it. Living life and having a chance to write about it are each a full time thing.

So when I sat down to check out some of my favourites for some reflection and inspiration I was amazed just how relevant they are for me right now. And I had to share it. I have been asking a lot of questions lately and the answers keep on coming.

I started here at A life in need of change and here at Big Mama.

One thing that I have really been wanting to post is my word for the year - be {a whole post in itself}. Reading these really reiterated why I chose this word. To know oneself and what one ought to be and be it.

What's on my mind?

With all my sorting and organising I have been thinking about a few things that I wanted to get down to try and clarify why I do what I do. So here goes.

One of my biggest motivators is something that seems to come up time and again through things that I hear and read, is that I have enough hours in a day to do all the things that God intends. Phil 4:13 says 'I can do all this through him who gives me strength'. Notice it isn't I can do all things. I'm not supermum! So how do I know what I should be doing? The answer lies in being in tune with God. Knowing his voice when I ask just what I am supposed to be doing. It usually starts with a feeling. Whether I have a peace about what I am going to do. Then looking at the options. What is important vs urgent. Something I learnt from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. My key bible verse at the moment is Rom 12:2 which you will find at the top of my blog. We live in a busy time, rushing from one thing to the next and it is so easy to overcommit our selves and our children and not really enjoy anything that we are doing. John 10:10b says 'I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. Daily we need to make a commitment to stand out from the world and do what is right with God

This leads me into my next train of thought. If there are things that I should be doing does it mean that I have to leave the things that aren't a priority? One thing I have heard countless times as a mum is the old adage that the washing will still be there tomorrow so we can leave it and do what is more important like playing with our children. They grow up so quickly etc etc. True but along with that days washing comes tomorrows and soon we are overwhelmed with the day to day things that drive us crazy. So I find I have adopted more of a theory of the need for balance. While I would love to plan my days and be organised for what is coming up I have learnt that my circumstances do not allow for it. At the moment I have an overall picture of what I what to get done and do things one at a time. When I feel I haven't been doing something in one area say creative I make time to do something. The same goes for time with my husband and children, organising, business opportunities. One thing that I am beginning to understand more is how to use my time more effectively. My thinking was I needed long stretches of time to really get things done. But I would be waiting too long because it just doesn't happen. So I found that spending small amounts of time on one thing gets me that much closer to my goal. It is amazing what you can do in 15 mins. A tip I picked up from my reading and notes about scrapbooking that I have been reading. While some might call the things I do over organised. The systems I have put in place save me time that I can use for other things. And ultimately I can enjoy my life.

What's on my nightstand?

Being the night owl that I have become since my boys go to bed so late. I have been doing a bit of reading. I love to read and relish curling up with a good book. So I thought I would share what I have been reading of late.

I started the Janette Oke series Love Comes Softly a while back and have got back into reading it. These are the last two in the series and I am getting through them at a fast rate. A great read! Part of my defining me material is thoughts and reflections on the books that I read. I have a section where I jot down things that I get out of books and movies and character qualities that I am inspired by.

When I picked up these ones at our library at Northpoint Church, Christine Cain's Stop acting like a Christian just be one caught my eye. I have heard her speaking so am looking forward to getting into this one. Especially when a recent teaching I heard reminded me that we are 'human beings not doings' Something I have been dwelling on of late.

As the boys go through changes as they grow I thought I would dig out a favourite from Ian Grant 'Growing Great Boys'.

And last a book that a friend lent me after talking about what I have been doing to get organised and here on my blog 'More hours in my day' by Emilie Barnes and Sheri Torelli. Interesting reading. Lots of things I am already doing and a number of pointers that I would like to put in place. Alot of what I want to share on my blog is about this. The things that I do to create time for what I want to be doing. There are alot of things that I wish I had known a long time ago and set up. Its taken a lot of time but I am getting there and it feels good. Love that it is from a Christian perspective

Will have to keep you posted about what comes from it
